Special Feature - Benidorm Palace
Proms at the Palace - Tony Henry - Lionel Blair - Marie Perrin - Dene Michael - Will Corujo - The Red Hot Chilli Pipers
and a host of Talent
After spending a number of years on holiday in Benidorm and the last two semi resident I finally made my debut as an audience member of the famous Benidorm Palace. Wow, these guys certainly know how to put on a show. My host Dene Michael who opened the show with the director and producer Marie Perrin gave a superb performance of Music is My First Love, on a stage I might add, that’s amazing, apparently the largest in Europe. On stage also for most of the evening what seemed like a cast of thousands. An international youth choir with over a hundred choristers.
The initial introduction was by Pauline McGough of OCI Radio who introduced the ‘star’ of the show Lionel Blair. I say ‘star’ in inverted commas because although Lionel was good and still pulls the crowd, every single one of those people on stage and backroom were Stars.

When the Red Hot Chilli Pipers arrived on stage, I suppose I was ‘gob smacked’, to say they played the bagpipes would be a complete understatement, these guys mastered the instruments in a way like no one before. With immense energy they rocked the place, none of your ‘Amazing Grace’ just vibrant rock.....
Norma Buschmann who had flown in from Berlin gave an astounding performance on classical guitar followed by a superb rendition of ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’ by Sabrina Cohen.
Described as The UK’s answer to Pavarotti - Tony Henry (sang at Buckingham Palace, Royal Albert Hall and FA Cup Final ) has the presence and showmanship that captivates his audience. He can now add the Benidorm Palace to what will soon be an ever increasing and impressive list of auditoriums and theatres. Accompanied at times by Will Corujo on violin, anyone who has seen Will before knows what an outstanding violinist he is, and the two entertainers together, just amazing.
Pure young talent from the Italia Conti School, Eloise Smith, Grace Holdstock,Gareth Bailey and Thomas Millar placated the audience with a medley of songs from the best known musicals.
Lionel Blair proved he still has the magic and treated us to one of his favourite Old Soft Shoe routines and even gave a special treat to a member of the audience who was invited onto the stage to partner him in a dance. Other credits must go to concert pianist Colby Wagemans and director Rob Barendsma. The children from the International College Benidorm, Sierra Bernia School in Alfaz Del Pi, Elian’s School in La Nucia and the Lady Elizabeth School, Lliber all of whom made it a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable evening. Musical arranger was Dave Peterson and Chris Wood stage managed the production.
I’ll be back sooner than later, Denny.
Thanks for the invite Dene
