Widely regarded as the most important and beautiful form of quartz, amethyst is a transparent, purple gemstone.
The presence of manganese in quartz results in amethyst, which is the birthstone for the month of February. Paler shades of this purple formation are often referred to as Rose de France, while the darker purple colours are more valuable and often referred to as Siberian.
Not only is amethyst mined in different parts of the world, but its importance and lore reaches to all parts of the world. Tibetan Buddhists craft rosaries from it. Catholic bishops wear rings of amethyst as a sign of celibacy. Greeks once considered it to a symbol of sobriety. Leonardo DaVinci even argued that the mere presence of amethyst was mineral food for the mind.
But one of the best known uses for amethyst is in jewellery and royal ornament. Since purple is widely regarded as the colour of royalty, it's a perfect fit. Amethyst is present throughout the Crown Jewels of England and was also prevalent in ancient Egyptian jewellery.
